Pilot Integration of Midwives into a Comprehensive Primary Care Setting

Research support from Employment and Social Development Canada in 2022 for the national Team Primary Care Program funded our BC project: Pilot Integration of Midwives into a Comprehensive Primary Care Setting. The pilot project’s main objective was to pilot the integration of two registered midwives in a primary care clinic – the Victoria Youth Clinic Foundry - part of a primary care network in the downtown Victoria, BC area serving youth clients aged 12-24. The midwives used their specialized training in sexual, reproductive, and perinatal health care to meet the diverse health needs of youth in the community, many of whom are disadvantaged across multiple fronts. The midwives also engaged in outreach with community partner organizations, helping to create pathways for youth into care and community, through social and cultural networks of support.

When the midwives are meeting with young people, they're also connecting with my outreach team in terms of allied health. They're connecting folks in terms of counseling, they're working with peers - they're really creating this web and demonstrating that we at Foundry Victoria are a safe place to access care for young people.
